The practical nurse demonstrates the following entry-level competencies:
I Provider of care
   A Assess basic physical, emotional, spiritual and sociocultural needs of the healthcare client.
   B Collects data within established protocols and guidelines from various sources:
      1 Client interviews
      2 Observations/measurements
      3 Healthcare team members, family and significant others
      4 Health records
  C Utilizes knowledge of normal values to identify derivations in health status.
      1 Documents data collection.
      2 Communicates findings to appropriate healthcare personnel.

II Planning
  A Contributes to the development of nursing care plans utilizing established nursing diagnosis for clients with common, well-defined health problems
  B Prioritizes nursing care needs for clients.
  C Assists in the review and revision of nursing care plans to meet the changing needs of clients.

III Implementation
   A Provides nursing care according to:
     1 Accepted standards of practice
     2 Priority of clients needs
     3 Individual and family rights to dignity and privacy
   B Utilizes effective communication in:
     1 Recording and reporting
     2 Establishing and maintaining therapeutic relationships with clients, families and significant others.
     3 Collaborates with healthcare team members to coordinate the delivery of nursing care.
     4 Instructs clients regarding health maintenance based on clients needs and nurses knowledge.

IV
Evaluation
   A Seeks guidance as needed in evaluating nursing care.
   B Modifies nursing approaches based on evaluation of nursing care.
   C Collaborates with other healthcare team members in the revision of nursing care plans.

V Member of the Discipline
  A Complies with the scope of practice as outlines in the nurse practice act of the state in which licensed.
  B Describes the role of the licensed practical/vocational nurse in the healthcare delivery system.
  C Utilizes educational opportunities for continued personal and professional growth.
  D Identifies personal potential and considers career mobility options.
  E Identifies personal strengths and weaknesses for the purpose of improving performance.
  F Adheres to a nursing code of ethics.
  G Functions as an advocate for the healthcare consumer.

VI Managing/Supervision
   A Assumes responsibility for managing his/her own actions when providing nursing care for individuals and groups of clients.
   B Is accountable for nursing care delegated to unlicensed healthcare providers.

VII Political Activism
   A Is aware that the practical nurse, through political, economic and societal activities can affect nursing and health.
