Foundations of
Nursing Care Practice |

This didactic and clinical course provides
an opportunity for the application of
basic nursing skills in the clinical
area. The student will practice in a
simulated lab setting and pass-off these
skills before applying them in a clinical
setting. Students are introduced to
the nursing-care process to manage care
for patients with medical/surgical conditions
in acute and chronic healthcare settings.
Developmental concepts as well as the
special needs of the geriatric population
are stressed. This course also includes
content regarding nursing as a professional
discipline, the theoretical basis for
nursing practice, current nursing issues,
and roles and education of various healthcare
providers. Ethical/legal, nursing concerns
are also discussed.
Competencies:
Student will understand the role of
the LPN within the healthcare team.
Student will be able to perform fundamental
skills in nursing.
Student will demonstrate knowledge
of selected medical/surgical conditions
with associated diagnostic and treatment
modalities.
Student will provide safe, competent,
and individualized nursing care to
adult patients in a variety of clinical
settings.

This course is a general orientation
to mental health principles and provides
an introduction to caring for patients
with mental health problems in a variety
of healthcare settings. The recognition
and management of deviations from normal,
mental health functioning are addressed.
The application of therapeutic communication
skills is emphasized.

Student will recognize that individuals
are unique with distinct physiological,
emotional, social, cultural, and spiritual
needs.

safe administration of medications including
dosage calculations. Information is
included on methods of drug administration,
desired effects, drug interactions,
adverse reactions, patient education,
and the effects of age on reactions
to medication. In addition, nursing
responsibilities when administering
medications pertaining to the gastrointestinal,
musculoskeletal, respiratory, central
nervous systems, and infectious disorders
are discussed.
Competencies:

of various types of medications.
Student will demonstrate accuracy
in dosage calculations.
Student will demonstrate knowledge
of nursing care of the patient receiving

to antineoplastic agents, reproductive
drugs, cardiovascular, immune, endocrine,
eyes and ears, and central nervous
systems are included.

Nursing Care of
the New Family |

This didactic
and clinical course is an introduction
to perinatal and pediatric nursing.
Perinatal nursing is the care of women,
infants, and families during the childbearing
process. Pediatric nursing includes
the assessment and care of children
at various developmental stages and
levels of health. Both acute and outpatient
settings are used to introduce students
to nursing care of women, infants,
and children.
Competencies:
Student will recognize all phases
of growth and development starting
with fetal development through adolescence.
Student will understand the physical
and psychological processes involved
in providing perinatal nursing care.
Student will provide safe, competent,
and individualized nursing care to
pediatric patients in a variety of
clinical settings.

A continuation
of Foundations of Nursing, this course
is designed to provide experience
in caring for patients with conditions
in acute care and outpatient healthcare
settings. Students will use the nursing-care
process to plan and evaluate their
nursing interventions. Emphasis will
be given to the role of the LPN as
a manager of care.
